Can Botox Cure Your Migraine Pain?
Chronic pain from migraines can be debilitating in so many ways, which is why researchers are consistently looking for some pain relief solutions. Recently, we mentioned a study that found using tanning beds could help ease the pain of migraines. While this one might be slightly “out of the box,” so to speak, we’ve come across another interesting topic that is circling the migraine discussion.
Specifically, Botox may help reduce the recurrence of those migraines people describe as crushing or eye-popping, otherwise known as ocular migraines. However, the treatment does not appear to work for migraines that are experienced as pressure inside the head, the researchers added. – HealthDay.com
According to the study, published in the February issue of the Archives of Dermatology, patients who were already receiving botox injections, and who were affected by migraines, felt a reduction in pain. The patients who felt “eye-popping” pain also felt the greatest pain relief by the botox injections, while those who suffered a more crushing head pain did not feel much relief.
In all cases where the botox provided some pain relief, it happened after three months of consistent treatment.
Patients who responded to Botox saw their migraines reduced from almost seven days a month to less than one day a month. Among those with exploding migraine, headaches were reduced from 11.4 days a month to 9.4 days a month. – HealthDay.com
It should be noted, and with a skeptical eye, that the study was conducted by Allergan Inc., a maker of botox. While it is a controversial study, conducted in the shroud of bias, botox is a migraine treatment that is growing in popularity. Even here in the valley, Arizona patients are being referred to this form of treatment for migraines.
