What is Sacroiliac Joint Dysfunction?
Sacroiliac joints connect together the hips and the pelvis to the legs and the entire upper spine. Sacroiliac joint dysfunction can occur for several reasons but ultimately comes down to a degenerative change in those large sacroiliac joints. This osteoarthritis can happen sometimes because of age or the result of trauma. And there might even be an instance where the sacroiliac joint gets extra loading and pressure because of a lumbar spine fusion.
Studies are clear that patients that receive an L5 to sacrum fusion often have 168% more dynamic loading on those sacroiliac joints than otherwise.
